Transform neglected neighbourhood areas of grass and weeds into something beautiful
What is a verge?
A street verge or ‘nature strip’ as it’s otherwise known, is the strip of land between property boundaries and adjacent roads. Neighbourhood residents and businesses have the opportunity to transform the dull strips of grass or concrete in those areas into lively, vibrant gardens in the street verges adjacent to their property.
Advantages of Verge Gardens
Not only do verge gardens look great, they also have many other advantages:
· Maintained neighbourhoods with public areas that are lovingly cared for and beautifully presented emanate a welcoming, close-knitted and caring community.
· An aesthetically desirable neighbourhood and strong community spirit draws people in and increases the value of the area.
· Verge gardens create opportunities for people to connect with nature as well as build friendships and socially connect with people in the community. It’s a fun and rewarding activity to do with neighbours and family members. You can get the kids involved too!
· Not only do plants look great but they also cool the heat! Through a process known as transpiration, plants release excess water into the air from the leaves and cool themselves and the environment around them when it’s hot.
· Garden plants provide habitats and food for animal and insects such as butterflies, lizards and pollinators like birds and bees.
· Reduce noisy, pesky council lawn mowers.
Where to start
Street verges are on public land owned by your local council, so before starting, you must register your verge garden for approval (free of charge). There are also a series of rules and council guidelines to help get you started in mapping out your garden and also ensuring that foothpaths and public fixtures still remain accessible. There is even a ‘A Dial Before You Dig’ service to ensure essential services such as gas lines and communication wires aren’t dug up or buried under gardens.
